Sports Medicine in Running - Workplace Series in Support of MSWA

Introduction

The workplace series in Sports Medicine featuring Running will take place over three sessions in the month of April 2018 through to June 2018 in direct support of MSWA

This program coincides also with the MSWA Step Up event which is scheduled on the Sunday 17th June 2018 with naming rights sponsor Shadforth Financial Group and held at Central Park

These workshops will also be held at the Central Park Theatrette on the following dates and with the following themes:

Workshop #1 – Lunchtime Session

Date: Monday 30th April 2018
Time: 1110 am for 1130 am commencement till 1230 pm
Location: Central Park Theatrette (opposite main lobby – upstairs)

Theme:  Understanding Variations in Running Training the Sports Medicine way.

Content in Brief:  This workshop will explore the various proper sports medicine methods of biomechanical training which at the same time reduces and minimises the risk of joint and muscular injury to the discerning runner.  Running has had a resurgence especially in the advent of parkrun – yet there is little understanding within the running community about proper sports medicine methods apart from anecdotal and often incorrect publications in social media.  Bring along a friend and sign up and restart your love for running or come and learn new ways to keep your walking and running passion alive for years to come.

Perfect leading up to the HBF Run for a Reason participants!

Participants will be invited to a Q & A session immediately after the workshop and those wishing to communicate directly with the presenter will have this opportunity out the foyer afterwards.

Cost: $15 per person

Workshop #2 – Lunchtime Session

Date: Monday 21st May 2018
Time: 1115 am for 1130 am commencement till 1230 pm
Location: Central Park Theatrette (opposite main lobby – upstairs)

Theme:  Physiological and Biometric Methods in Walking & Running

Cost: $15 per person

Content in Brief:  Explore the physiological requirements in walking and running and learn how to interface the current smart technology in your training through the proper understanding of how your heart works and conditions in heart health development. Also learn how molecular repair in your cells translates to function and also recruit for greater energy and performance that could mean a new PB or improving your overall health through the sport of running.  Understanding methods of counteracting injury physiologically is often missed and forgotten in sports medicine but not in this session!  Get a bunch of your local parkrun or local running group to attend this lunchtime session.

Workshop #3 – After Work Session

Date: Wednesday 13th June 2018
Time: 545 pm for 600 pm commencement till 700 pm
Location: Central Park Theatrette (opposite main lobby – upstairs)

Theme:  Preparation for a Run Event

Content in Brief:  There is so much misinformation about event or race preparation yet there is a wealth of information that could be learnt from how the human body relates to demographic factorials such as weather, terrain, elevation, wind, temperature. Event preparation is not just about what you eat, how much you sleep and the poor myth about carb loading – there are more biomechanical and physiological aspects to determine which this workshop will cover.

Perfect leading up to the MSWA Step Up on the 17th June 2018 !

Cost: $15 per person

The Presenter

Ian Wee is an Army veteran who fully understands the concepts of endurance running be it on paved roads and in undulating terrain and trails.  The army conditioning fully prepared him for run distances with full battle packs weighing 55 kg but not much from a critical spinal injury which left him previously partially paralysed.  That led him to his current passion for functional rehabilitation in Sports Medicine with a career than now spans 35 years and in it his quest for proper rehabilitation of runners affected by various forms of biomechanical and physiological conditions.

In his 50s Ian now runs a moderate average of between 6 to 10 km distances per run and has in the last decade created the Blue Marines in Walking and Running program which hundreds follow.  His no nonsense and clinical approach to the sport has saved many from incorrect diagnosis and advice and he also boasts one of the largest followings of fellow health professionals from surgeons, to doctors, physiotherapists, nurses and sports scientists who subscribe to his training methods.

Ian has also perfected the understanding of biometric technology through collaboration with Polar Australia and uses a biometric platform to assist with the review and monitoring of his athletes in his rehabilitation and functional programs.

He is known as a practical presenter and has appeared in various news platforms and radio interviews over the past 2 decades.  At most weekends he and his sports medicine team at present at cycling events, the previous Telstra and now Sunsmart Triathlon series and also at various WA Marathon Club events.  He was also Sports Medicine Director for the 2016 World Masters Athletics Championships with a client based spanning from 35 years to 92 years of age ! He currently serves as a Board member for Sports Medicine Australia WA and is the Sports Director and Managing Director of the Perth Integrated Health group of companies.  His current run event series is called the Secret Urban Run with the quest of bringing back running back to the urban centres with the third series being the Mosman Park chapter in July 2018.

Donation to MSWA

The Perth Integrated Health sports medicine team will donate ALL of the proceedings of this Sports Medicine series in Running to MSWA as part of their community involvement.  This donation is less the on-line fees that will need to be paid.  The proceeds will help MSWA in its mission to assist people with neurological conditions, a cause that is close to Ian’s heart.

This workshop series is also co-sponsored by Polar Australia with all participants provided with amazing Polar device specials with part proceeds also donated to MSWA.  Register before the 1st April 2018 so you can receive the April 2018 Polar specials via email.
