TIM’S RIDE – 10 NOVEMBER 2012

Introducing Tim’s Ride

To the many individuals and cyclists who have expressed their concerns, support and well wishes for this memorial event – a big thank you!  This Ride promises to become an iconic event with many in the community wanting to make a big difference for Safe Cycling with the emphasis on Increased Visibility on our roads.

Tim’s Ride in 2012 is also remembering Tim Anderson who was tragically killed along Curtin Avenue on the 8th March 2012 and the establishment of a legacy to support a tertiary student in need via the Youth Focus.

Tim’s Ride has also been also been a catalyst to bring different parts of the cycling community together which is why we are providing a memorial ride for all level of cyclists. Special thanks go to the following groups who have made this possible: Trench Health & Fitness, Bicycling Western Australia, Over 55s Cycling Club, Perth Integrated Health Cycling Group in concert with the Anderson Family.

The wait is over as we have the registration sign up for Tim’s Ride appended within this document.

General Event Details

Date: 10 November 2012 Saturday

Note that you need to nominate for the correct sign up link below as there are two rides on the same day namely the 22 km distance and the 5 km distance. You will therefore have to nominate one of two routes for this event.

Distance A – 22 km

Start Point: Langley Park beside Victoria Avenue.

General route: Depart Perth City – Langley Park from Victoria Avenue and travel westwards along Stirling Highway all the way towards Fremantle and then eastwards to Port Beach before turning northwards up Curtin Avenue where we will stop for Tim’s Memorial service before turning into Marine Parade before ending at Pearse Street in Cottesloe

.

The sake of safety a proper risk management report has been done and the actual route for this Event will mailed out together with the GPS tacx file.  Only Road and Hybrid bikes are permitted for this ride and BMX, Tri-Bikes and Road Bikes with Tri-bars will not be permitted to ride as they pose safety hazards for other members in the team.  Please ensure that you adhere to this safety requirement as it is a requirement for our insurance coverage.

We are very aware that there are many people who will miss out on this event with the limited for the 22 km ride being 350 riders and measures have to be taken to ensure that we do not have ‘tag alongs’ as this will increase the risk to the different groups and hence the sanctioned riders.

There will also be a pace vehicle, support vehicles, emergency repairs vehicle and a roving First Aid vehicle along the route since we are travelling along the heavy traffic zone along Stirling Highway.

The time for the ride has also been chosen to coincide with the approximate sunset period befitting the memorial service by a setting sun along the coast and also because it will mean that the majority of retail shops would been closing or have closed thus minimizing emerging vehicles from the heavily frequented stores and shops along the way.

As Tim’s Ride is NOT a race or a timed event – we will mandate a maximum speed and also a methodology of ensuring the teams riding do no end up congregating together.  Riders will be placed in a maximum of 30 cyclists per Group each with its appointed team captain and tail end Charlie

Distance B – 5 km Community Ride

This ride commences at Rous Head in North Fremantle and makes its way through the Bike pathway via Port Beach Road and then via Curtin Avenue to the memorial site. From there back on the bike pathway to Marine Parade and cross the road at Pearse Street and ending half way up the hill at Harvey Field.

Cyclists on this ride who feel the need to walk up the hill to Harvey Field are encouraged to do so and the specific safety and risk management report for this ride will be given to the participants who sign up for the 5 km distance.

This community ride is suitable for novice and occasional recreational cyclists and those who are keen to support Tim’s Ride but who are not normally regular cyclists.

This aspect of the ride event will be managed by members of the Over 55 Cycling Club who will afford the direction marshals and organise participants at the nominated start point.

Ride Requirements

Tim’s Ride is about Safe Riding and the 2012 theme is about Increased Visibility on our Roads.   Despite the fact that Tim was doing all the correct things in cycling such as lights, hi visibility clothing, helmet he was still tragically killed by the drunken motorist and we want to send the correct and measured message to other road users of the continued and growing presence of cyclists on our roads.  After all the majority of us are also users of motor vehicles.

To facilitate Safe Riding and our 2012 theme ALL riders for Tim’s Ride MUST have the following standard as COMPULSORY.  Please note that if you do not have these standards, you will NOT be permitted to participate in the ride even if you have registered and paid for it.  We are strict about enforcing this message:

1.   Front and rear lights.  Note that since we are riding into dusk, we advocate that you have strong lights but it should be aimed in front of the road and not to dazzle oncoming traffic and other fellow road users;

2.   Australian Standards Helmet.  If your helmet was purchased overseas, you are using an illegal product that does not meet Australian road rules requirements;

3.   Protective Lenses / Glasses.

4.   Gloves

5.   Road Bikes or Hybrids for the Distance A Ride. Tri-bikes and bikes with Tri bars fitted will not be permitted to ride with the teams as they pose a hazard to other riders in the team.

For the Distance B riders you are welcome to use any type of bike so as long as it is road worthy and has been serviced.  Note once again that Tri-bikes or bikes with Tri-bars fitted are not permitted for this distance ride either.

6.   Repair kit and tyres checked.  There will be the support repair vehicle for the Distance A ride provided courtesy of Glen Parker Cycles.

7.   Serviced Bikes. To minimise mechanicals along the Event which may hold up the Team and delay the memorial service proceedings, we strongly recommend that you get your bikes serviced before this Event.  Glen Parker Cycles have very kindly offered 10% off all of their servicing cost for labour for this event. Please mention Tim’s Ride when you book your bikes in for the servicing and don’t leave it to the last week to do so.

8.   Attire. ALL participants of this ride will be asked to wear the Tim’s Ride Jersey (Distance A) or the Tim’s Ride Cycling T-shirt (Distance B) for this event.  NO other cycling colours whether it is RFY, PIHCG, BWA, Over 55s Cycling Club or for that matter any social group or club will not be permitted other than Tim’s Ride jerseys or T-shirts.  NOTE that Distance A cost INCLUDES the Tim’s Ride jersey and Distance B ride INCLUDES the Tim’s Ride T-shirt.  We simply want uniformity, solidarity and a common theme and message coming from all riders for this event.

Team Configurations

Teams’ specific to Ride For Youth (RFY), Perth Integrated Health Cycling Group (PIHCG), Over 55s Cycling Club and Bicycling Western Australia (BWA) will be created for the Distance A Road Event.

The nomination of Team Captains and Tail End Charlies for these teams will be done by their respective Directors.  Riders will be asked to nominate ONE of the following affiliations and other cyclists who do not have one of these affiliations will be asked to select OTHER in the appropriate drop down column on the on-line registration system.

The other teams will have Team Captains and Tail End Charlies appointed from either RFY or PIHCG for this event for the Distance A riders.

All participants of the Distance B Community Ride are not required to have teams as they are encouraged to ride as a group per road rules along the bike pathway leading to the memorial site and from there via the shared pathway to Harvey Field.  There will therefore be no nominated team formations for Distance B riders.

Appointed Team Captains and Tail End Charlies will be given specific instructions and briefing about Tim’s Ride leading up to the actual event and on the day of the event itself. You will be expected to report approximately 45 minutes before the official final safety briefing for all riders.

Teams will not be permitted to end up bunching with each other, with a safe distance that will be mandated and maintained throughout the Ride so we do not disadvantage other road users and also ensure that turning vehicles can do so between the teams.  This also reduces the risks associated with stoppages at traffic lights, stop signs and roundabouts as there will be no road marshals for this team configured Ride.

Support Vehicles

We are privileged to have the support of a number of organizations who will be providing support vehicles for Tim’s Ride.

Budget will provide the required number for the event, Glen Parker Cycles will provide the Repair Support Vehicle, Trench Health & Fitness will also provide a vehicle and Perth Integrated Health will provide their first aid vehicle for this event.

Riders in different teams will have the added support of a Pace Vehicle in front, a number of Support Vehicles between the teams as well as other vehicles nominated above for the sake of due diligence and safety.

Insurance and Indemnity

All participants are reminded to read and adhere to the indemnity form associated with this Ride acknowledging the risks involved with riding in such a community event. As the event is (a) not a road race (b) a charity and memorial ride we ask that ALL participants respectfully adhere to the mandated maximum speed limit of 28 km/h if at all possible.  The insurance coverage for this event which is taken up by the Perth Integrated Health Cycling Group (PIHCG) as nominated Event Managers for Tim’s Ride requires these compliances from all riders.

Memorial Service

The Anderson Family will be hosting a short 15 minute memorial service for Tim Anderson at the site of the Ghost Rider along Curtin Avenue.

The Ride organisers have applied for the two adjacent car parks along Curtin Avenue at the site of the memorial to be closed off to all traffic in the afternoon leading to the event itself.  Tri Events have very kindly sponsored their Bike Racks which will be provided to the participants of the event for safety and orderly keeping whilst the memorial service is being conducted.

Riders will be required to enter into one of the two car parks as directed by volunteer road marshals at the location of the memorial site. Please follow their instructions. At the end of the memorial ride, riders will also be asked to then depart in an orderly fashion WITH their appointed teams heading off in formation to the end point of the Event which is Harvey Field.

Note that since we will be moving teams together, all riders within each team should park their bikes as close as they can together on the racks to avoid confusion and minimise crowd control.

The memorial service is scheduled to commence at 645 pm to coincide with the sunset befitting the memory and spirit of this service.

Event Get Together – Harvey Field

With the memorial service completed, riders will depart in an orderly manner in their Teams and ride back along Curtin Avenue, heading towards Marine Parade in Cottesloe.

The Event Get Together at Harvey Field is along Pearse Street. Riders are to read the instructions set out in the Risk Management report which will be sent to all participants leading to the event so that they are specifically aware of the entry point into Harvey Field which is mid way up the hill along Pearse Street.

The Anderson Family have requested that this ‘Afters’ get together be a celebration of Tim’s life and that the atmosphere and mood of the participants suit the theme.  As part of your sign up costs you will be provided with a special wrist band that will entitle each participant to a sausage and a bun and a cold drink which will be provided by the local Rotary Club.

Additional purchases of food and drink is also welcome via cash sales so please bring your money along with you.

We will commence the proceedings at Harvey Field at 730 pm to allow adequate opportunity and time for riders to organise themselves. As Harvey Field is extremely large, we encourage participants to place their bikes on the grass areas and for ease of location, once again best to leave the bikes together with your appointed Teams.

Merchandise

We will be providing opportunity for riders and supporters to purchase additional Tim’s Ride T-shirts and cycling jerseys at the merchandise tent.

There is also option for additional cycling jerseys and T-shirts to be purchase ON-LINE at the time of your registration for this event.

Parking & After Event Transport

There are very limited parking facilities along the roads near Harvey Field and we respectfully ask participants NOT to crowd these areas with their vehicles if they are riding from there to the city for the event.

The organisers of Tim’s Ride bear no responsibility to the placement of your vehicles or items that you place in these vehicles as they are your direct and sole responsibility. Though the Town of Cottesloe have been very supportive of this event – they also have a duty to uphold their by-laws and we ask that you respect the rights and privacy as well as the area occupied by many residents near Harvey Field.

We recommend that you park your vehicle either along the numerous car parks along Marine Parade or Curtin Avenue.

For those catching the train – Pearse Street from Harvey Field leads back to Curtin Avenue and there are two train stations along the way. Participants are encouraged to check the train schedules on their own for trains leaving for Perth and / or Fremantle stations and connecting trains to the various arterial routes.

For those riding back to your homes, we remind you ONCE again Visibility, Lights and Safety is our theme!
