Over the last 25 years he has been engaged in research and development of Metacognitive Therapy, an innovative approach with the potential for unrivalled levels of treatment outcomes.
Workshop Summary:
This one-day workshop will begin with a brief presentation of the theory of metacognitive therapy and contrast this approach with schema therapy. The session will focus chiefly on the core principles of treatment and will introduce specific change techniques and illustrate how these are used in the context of anxiety and mood disorders. Methods of metacognitive case conceptualisation, socialisation, meta-level change and relapse prevention will be described and illustrated with clinical material. The workshop will provide an overview of the MCT approach and in detail specific applications to disorders including Generalised Anxiety, PTSD, OCD and depression.
Training modalities:
The workshop will use didactic presentation of information, richly illustrated with case examples. There will be videotape demonstrations of treatment and its techniques as well as experiential exercises to facilitate comprehension of meta-level processes and change. There will be brief demonstrations of components of treatment and role-play exercises may be used.
Key learning objectives:
By the end of the workshop participants will:
1. Have an understanding of the metacognitive model of psychological disorder and how this is different from the schema model
2. Be able to identify metacognitions of different kinds
3. Have a knowledge of the disorder-specific models used for case formulation
4. Be able to switch between object mode and metacognitive mode in treatment
5. Have acquired basic meta-level case formulation skills
6. Be familiar with MCT assessment tools
7. Be aware of a range of the most useful metacognitive change techniques
8. Understand how to implement these techniques and how to sequence the intervention
9. Have gained an up to date knowledge of the empirical status of treatment
