Your child will be coached by Yachting NZ qualified coaches in small group sessions run over a three day block course at the Plimmerton Boating Club, from 9:00am to 3:00pm. They will learn the basic science of sailing with plenty of on the water experiences.
There will be some on land sessions but it is our aim to make the course both practical and enjoyable.
Topics covered:
Safety First Getting to know your boat Fun with Knots Capsizing
Getting your boat in and out of the water Tacking Gybing
Points of Sail Rules and meanings Checklists
We will be on the water as much as we can be - (weather dependant) – we will not be putting your child on the water if it is not suitable to do so.
It is our aim to have your child able to sail a boat confidently themselves at the completion of the course. Most importantly we want them to enjoy themselves and have an experience they will remember for life.
Once the initial learn to sail course is complete and you know your child wants to continue on with sailing they will be offered a place in the Rainbow Group which sails on Wednesday evenings. Your child will share the use of a club boat until graduation into Green Fleet.
There is a pathway in sailing depending on the individual sailor, some like the club activities, on the water games and the general social side of sailing. Some become more competitive and want to go on to race in regional regattas and national competitions. We cater for all, we just want to see the children enjoy their sailing and will help with any pathway they wish to take.
