Description
By attending this course, participants will have the knowledge and confidence to provide appropriate advice, treatment and/or referral for inflammatory conditions of the lactating breast. Further, by accessing research-enhanced strategies the participants will be able to support women achieve optimal lactation in whatever clinical scenario these women present.
The body of knowledge about human lactation and its impact on health outcomes beyond the childbearing year continues to grow and along-side this increase in knowledge is the role of the health care professions.. As the scope of clinical practice in peripartum care continues to develop, there is demand for this course. Clinicians in general practice will benefit from this course as patients are more aware of what health professionals can offer women with disorders of lactation.
The course includes over 10 hours of recorded lectures from leading researchers and highly experienced clinicians in the field of lactation. In addition, there are two days of face to face learning with participants benefiting from small groups with one tutor per group for practical sessions.
This program has been developed for the Physiotherapy profession. Other health professionals that care for peripartum women and their babies including GENERAL PRACTITIONERS, MIDWIVES, LACTATION CONSULTANTS, OSTEOPATHS, CHIROPRACTORS, MYOTHERAPISTS and LYMPHATIC THERAPISTS are welcome to attend.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, you will:
- Understand the health outcomes across at least 2 generations of lactation and breastfeeding
- Understand the role of the physiotherapist in lactation and breastfeeding support.
- Understand the anatomy and physiology of the lactating breast that are relevant to physiotherapy
- Demonstrate an ability to identify problems within the context of the lactating dyad using research-enhanced principles
- Identify and perform the key components of a lactating breast assessment for inflammatory conditions
- Demonstrate the ability to provide informed choice for assessment and intervention and competency in Infection Prevention and Control principles and application
- Demonstrate clinical reasoning from a research-enhanced base when advising &/or applying a therapeutic intervention
- Develop a repertoire of therapeutic modalities that are applicable to the lactating breast
- Appreciate the roles of lactation consultants and other health practitioners with expertise in lactation and breastfeeding
- Develop a network of multidisciplinary support with colleagues, lactation consultants and other health practitioners involved in pregnancy, peri-partum care, lactation and breastfeeding.

Please note: Electrophysical agents (EPA's), including therapeutic ultrasound, are taught on this course. To participate, in this component of the course, you will need to have been taught EPA's in your undergraduate degree and that your professional indemnity insurance covers the use of EPA's. Observation (not direct use of the equipment) of EPA's will be available if you have not been taught and examined on EPA's through an undergraduate course.
