Wakatipu Yacht Club Local Information

Wakatipu Yacht Club is located on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown – a special part of New Zealand renown for it’s scenic beauty and surrounded by mountains.  The lake is 310m above sea level, 290kmin area and 380m at its deepest point.  Lake Wakatipu is glacial fed so the water temperature is only 8 – 11oC (46-51oF) – even in the peak of summer!   To make sure you enjoy the event to the fullest, we urge all competitors and supporters heading out on the water to bring appropriate clothing, in particular:

  • Wetsuit
  • Windproof Jacket/Aquafleece
  • Sailing Boots/Socks  preferred

Wind conditions on Lake Wakatipu can change very rapidly.  If the wind blows up, even with normal daytime temperatures around 24oC, wind chill factor can be very low and a wet child will lose body heat very quickly in the wind.

A Queenstown Lakes District Council Bylaw states that on any vessel six metres long or less, life jackets must be worn at all times.  Any parent who may wish to assist or travel on any of the rescue boats during the regatta should bring their own life jacket as the yacht club only has a few spares.
