The Haven Classic

Description

Fairhaven Surf Life Saving Club is excited to present the inaugural running of The Haven Classic. The Haven Classic is a downwind ocean paddle along the breathtaking coastline of the Great Ocean Road. Paddleboards, Skis, SUPs and Outriggers are all welcome to participate in this super fun event that is run by paddlers, for paddlers. Our expert Water Safety Team at the Fairhaven SLSC will have you covered every stroke of the way. Your safety is our number one priority. Once you cross the finish line, the famous Sunset Bar at Fairhaven SLSC will be in full swing with a huge event after party planned to keep you buzzing all night!

The course may be reversed pending wind conditions. Our aim is to give you the best downwind conditions possible.

Competitor Check In

Fairhaven Surf Life Saving Club. 11:30am – 1:15pm.

Each competitor must check in to:

  • Collect your race number - to be placed on the front right hand side of your craft
  • Sign the Competitors Declaration
  • Have your mandatory safety equipment checked
  • Collect your free hi vis race hat

Online entries close Wednesday 13th December at 11:00pm

On the day entries will only be available if event is not sold out. Max. 99 competitors.

 

Water Safety

Your safety is our number one priority! The Fairhaven SLSC Water Safety Team will be implementing a comprehensive water safety plan that will include 6 x IRB’s and 6 x jet ski’s across the spread of the field to ensure safety of competitors at all times.

 If assistance is required, competitors must wave their hands/paddle and/or use their whistle to attract the attention of water safety crews. In a rescue situation, first priority will be given to the competitor, not your craft. Retrieval of craft will be done if safe to do so.

If you see a fellow competitor in trouble, please offer assistance and/or get the attention of water safety crews ASAP.

If you pull out of the race you must advise the race organisers at your earliest convenience.

Competitors will be notified on Friday 15th December 2017 of any potential changes to the course direction or event date. (Backup date: Sunday 17th December)

 

Mandatory Gear

You are required to present the following mandatory items at registration, failure to do so will see you unable to compete:

  • PFD (prone paddlers exempt)
  • Boat leash/Leg rope
  • Hi-vis vest as your outer most layer (bright PFD accepted)
  • Hi-vis hat (provided at competitor check in)
  • Orange day flare
  • Min. 750ml water/hydration fluid

 

Recommended Gear

  • Mobile phone in a waterproof case
  • EPIRB/PLB

 

Transportation

A shuttle bus and craft trailer will be provided to transport you and your craft from the pre race briefing at Fairhaven SLSC to the start line in Lorne. Tickets need to be purchased for these services as part of your online entry.

Partners/friends/family members are welcome to purchase a bus ticket also. They can get the bus back to Fairhaven after the race start. Return tickets are still just $10.

The bus to Lorne will depart from the bus stop out the front of Fairhaven SLSC at 1:45pm, immediately following the pre race briefing.

The craft trailer will be situated in the car park opposite Fairhaven SLSC from 11:30am. It is your responsibility to ensure your craft is securely loaded onto the trailer prior to the commencement of the pre race briefing. The trailer will be driven to the grass area of the Lorne foreshore next to the main car park where you can unload your craft prior to the race.

Dash For Cash

Easy!! First Individual Male and Female paddler to the First Turning buoy (lefthand turn near the Lorne Pier) gets the cash!! $100 each. You must complete the race to redeem the cash.

Presentations/After Party

Presentations will be held in the Fairhaven SLSC as close to 6:00pm as possible (once the final competitor has finished), immediately followed by the epic event after party.

Prizes will only be awarded to categories where there are 5 or more entrants.

RACE RULES

Water Start

Competitors will be placed between two IRB's or jet skis approximately 100m off Lorne beach. All SUP and prone competitors must be in a seated position prior to the race start.

An air horn or shot gun will signify the start of the race.

 

Finish

After rounding the last buoy, competitors will be required to paddle straight to shore. Competitors must beach their craft (craft to be left completely out of the water) and then run through to the finish line carrying their paddle. Each competitor must cross the finish line to receive a finish time and placing. Any jostling/hassling (involving contact) for position at finish line will result in disqualification. Competitors must remain in the finish area until their place, name and number, is recorded by the race timer.

 

Board Certification

SUP Board Classification

Stock - 14ft maximum length, no weight restriction, fins must be fixed in, board design is open, multi hulls, rudders, foils and footstraps are not allowed.

Unlimited - no maximum length, no weight restriction, board design is open. Multi hulls, foils and footstraps are not allowed.

 

Prone Board Classification

Clubby boards - 10ft 6in maximum length. Must meet SLSA specifications.

Stock - 12ft maximum length, no board weight restriction, fins must be fixed in, board design is open, multi hulls, rudders, foils and footstraps are not allowed.

Unlimited - no maximum length, no board weight restriction, board design is open. Multi hulls, foils and footstraps are not allowed.

 

Race Directors

The Race Directors will be responsible for officiating the start and finish of the race. The Race Directors are the head officials for all disciplines at the event and have the final say in disqualification rulings, finishes and race protests.

 

Protests

A written protest must be lodged with the Race Director within 30 minutes of the last competitor finishing the event. The Race Director and associated event officials will determine the outcome of any protests.

  

Boat Leash/Leg Rope

All competitors must wear a suitable boat leash/leg rope and be attached to their craft at all times during the race. Only upon reaching the beach may a competitor remove boat leash/leg rope to run to the finish line.

 

PFDs

It is compulsory for all competitors, except prone paddlers, to wear a minimum certified AS4758 Level 50 or Type 1, 2 or 3 lifejacket whilst competing in the event.
It is highly recommended that all prone paddlers also wear the type 1, 2 or 3 lifejacket.
If competitors wish, they are permitted to wear certified AS4758 Level 100, Level 150 or Level 275 Lifejackets in a conspicuous colour, which are of a higher safety standard.

 

Age Eligibility

Competitors must be a minimum of 15 years of age on the event day. Competitors under 18 years of age on the event day must have completed the parent/legal guardian declaration section of this online entry and have their parent/legal guardian sign the Competitor Declaration and Terms and Conditions form on the event day.

 

Other Event Requirements

All competitors must be competent swimmers able to swim at least 400 metres unaided.

 

Disqualification

At no time during the race may a competitor impede another competitor. Unsportsmanlike conduct/actions will result in disqualification. Any competitor failing to round all buoys as directed will be disqualified from the race.

 

Course options

In the event the conditions deem a change of the course direction, (Fairhaven to Lorne) competitors will be notified the day before the race as well as at the Pre race briefing.

 

Race Cancellation

In the unlikely event of the race being cancelled due to weather conditions all competitors will be notified as soon as reasonably possible on the event day.

 

Refunds

Refunds may be given to competitors prior to 16th November at the Race Directors discretion.

No refunds will be given after 16th November.

In the event of a cancellation of the event due to a storm, rain, inclement weather, winds or other “acts of God”, entry fees are non-refundable.
