FOUNDATION (LEVEL 1) COACHING COURSE

Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th June 2017

The coach development pathway takes coaches through a measured program to give them the skills and confidence to prepare individuals and teams from the introductory levels through to high performance and elite competition.  It begins with basic paddling skills and works through to advanced performance.

Foundation Coach

The foundation coach works with beginners and recreational paddlers to introduce the basic paddling skills common to all canoe/kayak disciplines.  Key discipline specific skills are also introduced.  Foundation accreditation is suited to coaches introducing paddlers at canoe clubs and in schools.

Course Description:

  • The Queensland Canoeing Foundation (Level 1) Coaching Course consists of two full days approximately 9:00am to 3:00pm each day
  • Participants should expect each day to consist of approximately half a day in a semi classroom-style environment and the other half of each day on the water
  • Candidates must be prepared to put their skills into practice and will be required to do some work prior to the course to assist in moving swiftly through the syllabus
  • Participants should come prepared for paddling sessions in both the morning and afternoon of the course

Course Cost:

  • $200 for current members of Queensland Canoeing ($250 for non-members)
  • Course fee does not include Australian Canoeing Coach Registration fee of $44 for 4 years
  • an additional $50 for hard copies of resources
  • Please note: Courses need to meet minimum registration numbers to run on advertised dates. If sufficient numbers are not registered one week before the program, alternative arrangements will be made with registered participants.

Pre-Requisites Prior to Attending the Coaching Course

  • Satisfactory completion of the following Australian Sports Commission's free online courses (each course takes approximately 4 hours to complete with an assessment at the end of each module) : - 
    • Community Coaching General Principles Course
    • Play by the Rules - Child Protection Course
      • PLEASE NOTE:  Both certificates of completion need to be sent to Steven Rowland qc.education@canoe.org.au by 12:00noon Monday 29th May 2017.
    • Evidence of relevant basic canoe/kayak skills
        • Documentation required: - AC Basic Skills Award, evidence of involvement in canoeing as a competitive athlete, a current ACAS award, a current coaching certification in another canoeing discipline

What to bring to the course:

  • Your own lunch, morning and afternoon tea
  • A notebook and pen(s).
  • Evidence of completion of the ‘Community Coaching General Principles Course’ and the ‘Play by the Rules - Child Protection Course’.
  • All your own canoeing gear including life-jacket, kayak, paddle  for the practical on-water sessions, appropriate clothing for the weather, a warm, dry change of clothes and equipment that you would normally have with you when canoeing/kayaking. 

Recommended Prior to Commencement of Practical Coaching Experience:

  • Current First Aid  and CPR Certificates
      • Documentation required: Certificates of completion including expiry date
  • A current Working With Children Check (for coaches 18 years of age or older)
    • Obtained online from your state government department
      • Documentation required: Working With Children Clearance Certificate

Required for Application for Registration:

  • Completion of a minimum 20 hours practical coaching experience with an approved mentor coach
    • Documentation required:
      1. Coaching log book signed by your mentor coach(es) outlining details of the practice sessions conducted and coaching hours completed

      2. Coaching plan for a minimum of 8 sessions 
        •  (template included with this information package)
      3. Practical Observation Assessment Checklist completed and signed by your mentor coach 
        • (checklist included with this information package)
  • Agreement to abide by the AC Coach Code of Behaviour
    • Documentation required: 
      • Signed AC Coach Code of Behaviour 
  • Completed AC Coach Accreditation Application Form
    • Documentation required: 
      • Signed AC Coach Accreditation Application Form
  • Payment of $44.00 4-year coach accreditation fee
    • Documentation required: 
      • Completed AC Coach Accreditation Application Payment Form
