The Slater + Gordon Burleigh Swim Run Australia Day (26th January) Challenge is a fun community fitness event held in front of the Burleigh Lifeguard Headquarters that is open to everybody from kids as young as 5 years to adults 60yrs+. The morning consists of three events (the Challenge, the Taste Tester & the Young Guns) with all events involving an ocean swim (wade for the young guns) and path running, with distances that can be achieved by all ages and abilities. All events are individual (solo) based except for ‘The Challenge’ which also offers a mixed team (mixed gender - 1 swims and 1 runs) option as well.

The event is run and coordinated by Ty Dowker & Burleigh SLSC.

Australia Day Events

The Challenge - 400m Ocean Swim and 4km Path Run (Solo & Team option)

(Categories – 12&Under, 16&Under, Open, 30-39, 40-49, 50+ and Mixed Gender Teams)

The Taste Tester - 200m Ocean Swim and 2km Path Run (Solo only)

(Categories – no age categories – event open category for all competitors)

The Young Guns Challenge – 400m wade and 400m Path Run (Solo 5-12yrs only)

(Wave Categories – 5-7, 8-9, 10-12 – all competitors receive a medal)

Please note: The age you are for each race will be the category you race in e.g. if I’m 12 on Australia Day race, I’ll race in the 12 and under category.


Event formats (course maps on website www.burleighswimrun.com.au)

All events start with the Zarraffa’s Reedy Creek swim leg off Burleigh Beach (water safety provided from Burleigh SLSC), then through the 7-Eleven Transition zone where shoes are put on to then start the Running Shop Burleigh Run leg which is performed on the path between Burleigh and Nth Burleigh. Whether you are a first timer wanting a fun fitness event, an aspiring athlete, an average Joe or wanting to do it in a team of two, the Australia Day Swim Run event is for you.

The Slater + Gordon Burleigh Swim Run Australia Day Challenge is fast becoming an iconic fitness event for the community on Australia Day. Based around Fitness, Families and Fun, this blue ribbon event allows world class athletes to rub shoulder by shoulder with first time multisport individuals with all entrants being in the running for $7000 in cash and prizes. At the conclusion of the event there are presentations, fluid replacement stations, random draws for participants as well as food and beverages.

6am - Late entries open (+$10) Costs: $50 individual, $60 team and $35 Young Guns) Athlete bag collection also open and closes 15 minutes prior to start of each age wave e.g. open male closes at 8am
6.30am - Competitor Briefing – on observation deck
6.45am – Taste-tester Challenge (200m swim 2km run) - Males & Females (all ages)

7.00am – The Challenge 12&u & 16&u (400m Swim & 4km Run) - Male & Females              
7.15am - The Challenge 30-39yrs (400m Swim & 4km Run) - Male & Female
7.30am - The Challenge 40-49yrs & 50+ (400m Swim & 4km Run) - Male & Females
7.45am – Young Guns Challenge 5-12 year olds (400m Wade & 400m Path Run)
8.15am – Teams Challenge Mixed Gender Teams (400m Swim & 4km Run)
8.45am - The Challenge Open Males & Females (400m Swim & 4km Run)
9.30am – Presentations & Random Draws for a 10am finish
 

(the event coordinator has the right at to adjust times/course if needed due to conditions and/or participant numbers along with adjusting prizemoney/vouchers if limited numbers)

 

Back up date: In the event of bad weather and/or surf conditions, a back-up date of Sunday 7th February has been approved by the GCCC for the event to be postponed.

What to bring: swimmers/togs, goggles (optional), running shoes (recommended), hat (optional), towel, sunscreen, water bottle & energy!

Parking: There is plenty of early morning parking around the event with addition parking available behind the Burleigh Bowls club. Please be aware majority of parking in Burleigh now is pay to use.

Racing Singlet (rash vest): it is now compulsory under SLSA sanctioned events that a high viz lycra singlet top needs to be worn while performing aquatic events that are endorsed by SLSA and SLSQ.

To meet this requirement, early bird entry athletes for the Challenge event and the Taste-tester (not Young Guns) who enter before Christmas Day 25th December, will receive a FREE event high viz race singlet.

Athletes who miss this great opportunity can be supplied a fluro high vis lycra singlet to wear for the event on race day but will need to be return at the conclusion of the event on a hand out and hand back policy. A $30 fee applies if rash shirt is not returned if borrowed.
