Beyond Networking: Creating Professional Relationships

Whether you’re new to the profession or an established professional, relationship building is a skill for life. IABC Victoria presents an opportunity to go beyond networking and learn the art of creating relationships.

For many, the idea of networking can create a sense of impending dread. This can be especially difficult for those of us who identify as introverts as going to a networking event can feel like the first day of school all over again.

University can be great at preparing us for the responsibilities of the communication profession but where can young professionals go to learn the interpersonal skills required to unlock job opportunities and grow our professional relationships?

It’s time to forget learning how to ‘network’ and focus on how you can learn to create lasting, genuine professional relationships at an event suited to both students entering the communication profession and more established communication professionals who want to take their interpersonal skills to the next level.

Join a panel of industry professionals (of introverts and extroverts!) as they share with you their embarrassing missteps and the highs and lows of their professional relationship building experiences. There will also be a real-life opportunity to put your new skills into practice over canapes and drinks and talk openly about how you found the experience.

Panelists:

Jen Sharpe, Founder and Managing Director: Think HQ

More about our panelists:
Jen Sharpe, Founder and Managing Director of Think HQ
Jen is Founder and Managing Director of communications and public relations agency, Think HQ - which specialises in projects of substance. An introvert at heart, Jen has built her professional reputation on delivering quality campaigns across not-for-profit, philanthropic and government sectors that have been influenced by her solid relationship building skills.  She depends on quality, not quantity in terms of professional relationships and believes value alignment is the key to great ongoing connections.

Lloyd Lazaro, Managing Partner: Asia Pacific Ampersand Executive, Search & Advisory
As Managing Partner of one of Australasia’s leading talent acquisition, leadership development and advisory firms, Lloyd is inspired by people who make a difference, and make it count.  A passionate people leader, Lloyd has built a vast network of professional and personal relationships that has resulted in sustainable and strategic commercial partnerships – always underpinned by an authentic and purposeful approach.

Damien Batey, Manager Communications Asia Pacific & Middle East Motorola Solutions
With twenty year’s experience in corporate affairs, media and consulting spanning domestic and multinational corporates including Fairfax Newspapers, Damien learned early in his career that networking executed well pays handsomely. Working as a young, suburban newspaper journalist in the late 1990s, the relationships he forged with a local police Criminal Investigation Unit led to the scoop of a lifetime.Although Damien has embraced the changes of a world turned social and digital, his passion for networking remains. So too does his strong personal belief that not even the most popular tweet or funniest cat meme comes close to the authenticity of networking face-to-face and one-to-one.

Michael Korjen, Public Relations Manager: Bombora Technologies
Michael is a recent IABC Victoria Communicator of the Year award winner and the Public Relations Manager for Bombora Technologies, one of the world's leading Internet infrastructure companies. As a communicator from the social networking generation, Michael’s professional relationships are managed in equal measures of Tweet notifications, InMails and Rolodex size – although it’s always quality over quantity for him. Working with the world’s fiercest CIOs has taught him that small talk with communications professionals is much less awkward in comparison.
