DISTANCE RUNNING SEMINAR

TIME

Sunday 27th April 2014
Start: 1.00pm to 5.00pm

AIM

For whatever reason you run, be it fun, fitness, or personal achievement, the aim of this seminar is to help you get more from your running. Whilst the prime target is runners preparing for a marathon, in particular, the Perth Marathon on 15th June 2014, the topics under discussion will also greatly assist in the education of runners of all ambitions. We have four presenters who are the absolute crème de la crème in their fields and all are (or have been) members of the West Australian Marathon Club. The topics to be covered are:

TRAINING PROGRAMMES – Jon Kappler

Jon is the Club’s interval coach and runs the training session at Perry Lakes on Tuesday nights. Jon also assisted with the coaching of WA’s first female Olympian marathoner, SUE MALAXOS (1996 Atlanta). He is also the current Masters Athletics WA M40 record holder for the 5000m with a time of 15.39.0. Jon’s knowledge should ensure we are suitably prepared to achieve our goal, whether it be a 3-hour or 5-hour marathon or any distance running event.

NUTRITION – Emily Eaton

Emily, an Accredited Practising Dietitian and an Accredited Sports Dietitian, is currently a Performance Dietitian at the WA Institute of Sport. She has worked with a range of athletes of all ages and from a variety of sporting pursuits. She is passionate about nutrition and assisting individuals to optimise their health and sports performance through an increased understanding and confidence with their nutrition for training and competition.
A distance runner herself, Emily has completed several half marathons and more recently the 2013 Perth Marathon. This presentation will give you some practical tips on getting the most out of your body when on the run.
Copies of Glenn Cardwell’s Gold medal Nutrition will be available for sale at the seminar.

BIOMECHANICS – Darryn Sargant

Darryn is a podiatrist operating out of the Peak Podiatry Centre in Subiaco, is a graduate from Curtin University and has received a Fellowship of the Australasian Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine. Darryn attended the Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 Olympic Games and Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, ran his inaugural marathon in 2007 (New York Marathon) and is a regular presenter at our
seminars. He will discuss what “pronation” is all about, including the footwear necessary to keep us injury free and also give his slant on the barefoot running debate.

INJURIES & WOMEN IN RUNNING – Dr. Carmel Goodman

Carmel is a runner and also a highly acclaimed Sport and Exercise Physician. Carmel is the Team Doctor for Australian Women's Hockey Team and has attended the last three Olympic Games in that capacity. She has also been the Team Doctor for the Australian Men's and Women's National Rowing Team. Carmel will discuss some of the more frequent running injuries (common to all runners - male or female) including diagnosis, management and prevention.  Carmel will also cover specific problems that distance running can cause in some women, how to avoid these problems and stay a healthy runner.
